Craft During 1976, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit established the Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques (SUPPORT), with the objective of giving rural Thais alternative sources of income and also for reviving some of the kingdom’s traditional crafts. The result has been a variety of beautiful items available in Thailand through a chain of outlets called Chitrlada Shops. There are five such shops in Bangkok alone while others can be found in Nakhon Pathom province and Chaing Mai. Among the SUPPORT products to be found in these shops are hand-woven silks from the northeast, elegant “Yan Liphao” handbags, made from vine that grows in the south often adorned with gold fittings, jewelry in distinctive designs, supple Thai cotton in classic patterns and numerous moderately priced souvenirs. All funds raised from the sale of these crafts go to the SUPPORT project. Textile Hand woven textiles are typical of traditional rural communities, and the craft flourishes in the northeast. The most famous fabric of the region is “Mat Mee” silk with production centered in Khon Kaen where there is a week-long annual silk festival in early December. Some handicrafts from Sikkim, foremost among which is the woolen carpets with fascinating motifs; motifs which are very much germane to the Sikkemese culture, can also be found in the busy markets of Siliguri. Besides frequenting the shops at Hill Cart Road and Sevoke Road or the Hong Kong market, also visit the road side stalls of this quaint city to have the best of bargain and buys.

I Am A Craft Brewer

“I Am A Craft Brewer” is a collaborative video representing the camaraderie, character and integrity of the American Craft Brewing movement. Created by Greg Koch, CEO of the Stone Brewing Co. and Chris & Jared of Redtail Media…and more than 35 amazing craft brewers from all over the country. The video was shown to a packed audience of 1700 craft brewers and industry members at the 2009 Craft Brewers Conference as an introduction to Greg’s Keynote Speech entitled “Be Remarkable: Collaboration Ethics Camaraderie Passion.” As is tradition for the CBC Keynote, a toast to the audience was offered. This time, the beers offered for the toast were all collaboratively brewed craft beers including Isabella Proximus, Collaboration Not Litigation, AleSmith/Mikkeller/Stone Belgian Style Triple, Jolly Pumpkin/Nøgne-Ø/Stone Special Holiday Ale, and 2009 Symposium Ale “Audacity of Hops.” A re-cut version will be posted as soon as possible, and a program is in development to include even more of America’s amazing craft brewers.
