Woodworking # 4 – Feeling Forest

As any carpenter can tell you, your first trip to a lumber merchant can be a little intimidating. In fact, my first trip more than a little frustrating. In this video, I will cover some issues and the terminology that will help you, will be better prepared for your next trip to the lumber yard. Only a few of the topics covered include the identification of the types of cuts, the estimated board feet, and find a good supplier of wood.

Best buy is what is known as a centre board, from a through-sawn log. The centre-board is in effect 1/4 sawn but it’s going to be wider than a board sawn from a quadrant shaped section of the log. (Which is how timber is ’sawn on the quarter’.) It’s easier to talk about cubic feet. A board 12 feet x 12 inches x 1 inch thick is 144 cubic inches ( a cubic foot). Your board-feet system would drive me nuts!

Yup. Of course there could be some unique circumstances where it would be very useful ( like guitar necks).

  • thedonutman:

Thanks. I’ve got a few pieces of flatsawn korina that I’m thinking of laminating that way around for use as a guitar neck. When you say it’s not really functional, do you mean that the dimensions aren’t really useful because it effectively becomes a 1″ wide board?

  • TheWoodWhisperer:

Definitely not a stupid question. The answer is yes. Its not really a functional board when oriented that way. But technically yes, that would be quartersawn.

  • thedonutman:

Stupid question: IF I got a flatsawn board and turned it on it’s side would that not make it quartersawn or close to it?
